Written by Lucas Nash

The monsoons are finally here,  the hot dry weather has subsided for the time being and it has been great feeling more moisture in the air for a change.  Seeing the rain has been very encouraging for most people and their plants trees and bushes are looking greener then before.   Water catchment is very important to have in this high desert climate whether your catchment system is mad of rain barrels or above and below ground tanks we are all doing our part in saving as much water as we can.  Making improvements to your water catchment systems such as rainbarels in Santa Fe or Albuquerque is the best way to effectively recycle rain water, let’s keeps up the good work!

Water Harvesting During the Dry Season

Written by Lucas Nash

The days have been getting hotter and hotter building up to the Summer Solstice that is now upon us, and little moisture has come to alleviate any discomfort caused by our high desert's heat and dryness.  Although the recent weather can discourage people from outdoor activities such as gardening due to a shortage of water, this only gives more of a reason for us to collect the rain water when we are fortunate enough to recieve it.  Santa Fe Rain Barrels continues to have a large supply of rain barrels to aid in the development of more sustainable water in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, as well as other nearby areas.  We also have a regular supply of discount tanks and cisterns, totes, and water catchment supplies.  We are committed to helping out with all of our clients' water catchment needs.

Let's minimize the effect of this dry period that we are in by being more sustainable with our water usage.  Please come to us for any needs, questions, or concerns regarding water harvesting and rain barrels in Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

The Importance of Water Harvesting Systems

Written by Lucas Nash

For any readers that were planning to go to the Oshara Village Flea Market tomorrow, the 30th of May, to purchase our rain barrels, we apologize for any inconvenience but the fundraiser we had planned for will not be taking place.  There is still a possibility that the fundraiser will be held on a later date.  Despite there being no fundraiser tomorrow, we are still available with a large supply of barrels and other water harvesting systems, and can arrange for a delivery or pickup.

Water harvesting systems have grown tremendously in popularity in Santa Fe and other areas in Northern New Mexico.  Driving around Santa Fe during the day, one can see the tremendous amount of water harvesting systems in the homes of many of the city's residents.  Terra cotta rain barrels compliment the stucco colored houses throughout the city, and large tanks can be hard to miss standing firmly in the yard of some homes, many having a capacity of up to 4000 gallons!  Both rain barrels and tanks/cisterns are good ways to harvest water in the high desert that we live in.  However, for those that are wanting to have even less dependence on city water water, harvesting systems using tanks and cisterns are recommended.  These large water harvesting systems can be incredibly efficient and sustainable.  Some of them collect only rain water, which is directed into the tank or cistern with tubes coming from the canales.  Other water harvesting systems collect gray water from the household, which gets recycled back into the earth when plants are watered.

The number of ways to design an effective water harvesting system is very large, and more creative ways are coming to be as sustainable living is more recognized for its importance in our lives.  However, no matter what particular method a person employs to collect water, it will always contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.  Rather than using the limited supply of water that comes shooting out of our faucets, water harvesting systems allow us to consciously harvest the water that comes as rain.  By collecting the rain, we can replenish it back into the earth, and in so doing allow for less of a dependence on outside resources for survival.  As we continue to live more sustainable lifestyles we will have a more positive effect on the earth that we live on, and be able to replenish some of the resources that we have used up out of ignorance.

May we all live more sustainable lives!

Rain Barrels in Santa Fe

Written by Lucas Nash

The rain barrel season is off to a good start and should continue on the road to more sustainable living and renewable water in our community.  Vegetable gardens are being planted, and water from the roofs of many of our homes is being put to good use.  The rain barrel business is selling wholesale rain barrels to various nurseries and outdoor businesses in the area, as well as retail to those that contact us.  We have been out with a trailer full of barrels near the entrance of Eldorado just outside of Santa Fe a number of times already this year, and plan on returning regularly.  Selling barrels on the side of the road like this facilitates clients picking up barrels, whether or not they are planning on it.  This generally takes place on Saturdays, and deliveries are available for those that are not able to come by.  Also, a projected fundraiser at Santa Fe's Oshara Village Flea Market is scheduled to take place on the 30th of May, with other possible Sundays selling there as well.

Most of the information regarding our rain barrels has remained the same, with a few changes.  The regular price for our 50 gallon rain barrels is $60, and that for our 60 gallon rain barrels is $65.  They come in gray, terra cotta, and brown colors, with some other rare variations.  Our brown colored barrels, generally preferred over the others, are $5 more.  Of course we still have a large stock of discount water tanks and cisterns, as well as 275 gallon totes.  Our services are offered to anyone needing them in Santa Fe and areas nearby.  Look for us by the entrance of Eldorado if you are interested!

Rain Barrels at the Santa Fe Garden Fair

Written by Lucas Nash

The planting season has returned to Santa Fe and the surrounding area, and local nurseries and outdoor businesses are once again offering their services for people's gardening needs.  Last Saturday, April 24, the Santa Fe Master Gardener's Association held the Santa Fe Garden Fair at the Santa Fe Fair Grounds.  The fair brought together local gardener's and related businesses, allowing for everyone to make community connections as well as obtain anything needed for outdoor planting projects.  There were a large variety of businesses at the fair selling things from small greenhouses to plants, as well as much information from the vendors and gardening community.  Santa Fe Rain Barrels was present at the fair, selling 60 gallon rain barrels and handing out flyers and business cards.  For those that attended the fair, it was a great way to prepare for outdoor work and see what's going on in the sustainability and gardening scene in Santa Fe.  By the end of the day, plants were being sold at half price by some of the booths and my dad was writing his phone number on pieces of paper for business cards.  It was a productive day that should lead to a productive year of planting and growth!

For those that did not attend the fair, rain barrels are still available at all times in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, and can be delivered for a small charge.  The price on our main rain barrels is the same as at the fair.  All information regarding rain barrels, tanks, cisterns, and any of our other services can be found on our website.  Water catchment is a service we continue to offer, and are committed to provide in the Northern New Mexico area.  In the spirit of the Santa Fe Garden Fair, may we all live more green, community oriented lives!

Water Catchment and Gardening

Written by Lucas Nash

With the moisture left over from the winter snows and warmer weather once again gracing the natural world, plants are coming back to life with much growth and energy.  The ideal conditions around us make this year appear to be a good one for various outdoor activities, landscaping and gardening in particular.  These great outdoor activities are beneficial not only for ourselves, but also our community and the environment in which we live.  They give us an excuse to be outside and get exercise, contribute to the natural beauty around us, and decrease our ecological footprint by removing some of the Carbon Dioxide emissions that are released when we drive our cars.  Gardening is something that has considerably developed in Santa Fe, and can be seen in the new Farmer's Market in downtown Santa Fe, as well as in the households of many locals.  Growing our own food, as well as other types of plants, is a sublime act in our society, and helps to support both a local economy and a healthy diet!

Sustainability is a critical factor for continuity of life, and can be seen in the way that plants get decomposed and recycled back into the earth when they are no longer needed.  This in turn gives life to another biological process.  By composting, we are able to cultivate healthy gardens, as well as eliminate the amount of biological waste that goes into the trash.  Santa Fe Rain Barrels offers custom designed composter barrels to help facilitate the process of gardening.  These composters are 60 gallon gray and black barrels, and set up in a way that allows for less time spent turning the compost and more time spent attending to plants.  We want to continue to attend to the needs of locals in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque area in regards to sustainable water and living.  May you collect the water and recycle the waste!

Spring time has come back around, even though it appears that the weather is still deciding whether or not it is ready to leave behind the winter cold.  With the melting of snow and ice off our roofs, now is an ideal time to collect water, especially in anticipation of the possible dry months lying ahead of us.  Santa Fe Rain Barrels is back in full swing, providing rain barrels and other services to various stores and businesses in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque area, as well as individual clients.

Wholesaling is something that the business is very active in, and our wholesale market has increased greatly since its birth about two years after the beginning of the rain barrel business.  We currently wholesale to a number of nurseries and other businesses in the area.  Although the majority of our clients reside in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque area, we also wholesale to Taos, and an individual distributor in Las Cruces.  We offer our wholesale rain barrels at a discount price, as long as the buyer has a store or business and is buying at least twenty barrels at a time.  Anyone with a business in sustainability, landscaping, irrigation, and water catchment, can benefit from the interaction, as those who we are currently selling to have.  Wholesale rain barrels in Santa Fe and Albuquerque can be a good opportunity for many local businesses.  May we continue to develop our local economy and lead more sustainable lives.

Rain Barrel Fundraising

Written by Lucas Nash
As the spring season comes to a near, rain barrels in Northern New Mexico will soon be back in full swing with the need for more gardening and watering of plants. This time of the year is a great time to plant new seeds, and in accordance with that, raising awareness on the environment and sustainability can open many doors for the year, as well as offer the possibility of making some money.  Santa Fe Rain Barrels has in the past sold rain barrels at a discount for non-profit organizations to hold fundraisers. This is beneficial to both parties as it gives us a chance to distribute our product and develop a better network of clients in the Northern New Mexico community, and gives those having the fundraiser a chance to make some money! People presented with the choice of buying rain barrels in Santa Fe and Albuquerque are more likely to do so in this setting as it benefits not only our business, but the cause behind the fundraiser and the community as a whole.

All ideas are welcome, and we will do our best to meet the needs of anyone wanting to make something happen. Whether it is to raise money for a school program, for a trip, or some kind of project, we are prepared to help. Please come to us for all rain barrel fund raising requests by contacting us.

Landscaping and Water Catchment

Written by Lucas Nash

In New Mexico, the land is very arid and dry. The sun blazes in the sky during the warm summer months, evaporating the majority of the water that is not connected to a larger body. Flying into the Albuquerque airport after spending time in more humid environments, I am normally astounded by the colors that I see out of the window of the plane. There is red, orange, dots of green, and underlying almost all of these colors, different shades of brown. The majority of the landscape in New Mexico is comprised of dirt, and there is a limited amount of biodiversity outside of our life-giving mountain ranges. Despite much of our art and culture is based on the hidden beauty of New Mexico's brown landscape, the people of Santa Fe and the surrounding areas seem to be cultivating more of a love for plants and greenery, and as this takes place, the art of landscaping comes into play.

Green plants and brightly colored flowers are greatly welcomed in contrast to the brown color of the stucco, and while this gift of nature does grace the appearance outside of our homes, it comes with a cost, one that is generally a good deal higher in New Mexico than other states. Water is scarce in our dry environment and therefore less abundant and more costly. It is therefore of great importance not only for the sake of our savings, but the environment in which we live, to conserve more water.

Although it may seem contradictory to have gardens and save water at the same time, there are many ways in which we can enjoy the beauty of nature without depleting its resources. Santa Fe Rain Barrels not only offers a way in which we can store and preserve the water that falls from the sky, but also strategies in landscaping that allow us to use less water in the first place. We understand the need for more plants in our fellow New Mexicans' backyards, and offer our services of landscaping and water harvesting in New Mexico to those in need. Please come to us with any questions and requests regarding any of our services.

Thanks!

Albuquerque Rain Barrels

Written by Lucas Nash
As the snow blankets the ground and the animals around us prepare themselves for a period of scarce food in the late fall, my father and owner of Santa Fe Rain Barrels, makes his own migration to warmer climates. His trips serve as a break from both the cold and his work, seeing as the business tends to slow down in accordance with what we see in nature. In this light, my dad has left the rain barrel business in my hands until his return in the spring. I am currently a student at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and generally will do work for the business on weekends when homework isn't the only thing on my mind. The majority of our business is during the warm, summer months, and therefore the general pace of the work during this time is easier to keep up with in addition to school.

Being in Albuquerque, I will drive to Santa Fe--where our business is located--on weekends in order to serve customers. Although the majority of our sales in Santa Fe, we are continuing to increase business in Albuquerque, and want to serve Albuquerque more in the future. During the summer, wholesale deliveries are sent to various nurseries in Albuquerque, and although this does not continue into the winter, orders are accepted either to be picked up or delivered, depending on the circumstance. We are hoping to increase our clientele in Albuquerque and to provide not only Santa Fe rain barrels, but Albuquerque rain barrels, to all that are in need.
We welcome requests for whatever our clients are looking for as far as rain barrels, tanks & cisterns, and other water harvesting systems in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Let's continue to conserve water!
